Professor Henk te Velde started as interim dean of the Faculty of Humanities on 1 March. Mark Rutgers' successor is faced with the task of getting the faculty back to financial health.

It’s Saturday and electric minibuses ride back and forth bringing prospective students to Leiden University’s various faculties. They want to see for themselves whether that interesting-looking programme will suit them.

With the red flag flying proudly on the Academy Building (Leiden University was on strike for the first time in its history!), the farewell event for former dean Mark Rutgers was held in the Telders Auditorium. After eight years, he has passed the baton to the interim dean, Henk te Velde.

Leiden University has seven faculties: Archaeology, Governance & Global Affairs, Humanities, Leiden University Medical Centre, Law, Social & Behavioural Sciences and Science. It also has an interfaculty Graduate School of Teaching, diverse centralised bodies and of course a management board.

Making sure your studies are going well is only half the story. It is also important to enjoy yourself and meet new people. Why not join an association, club or the University Sports Centre? Or acquire new skills by becoming a member of a student board or participation body.

As a student, you can access a range of other software free of charge or for a reduced tariff. These include office tools, cloud storage, anti-virus software and much more.

In addition to compulsory elements, most degree programmes also have elective credits. These are credits you can earn in a variety of ways, for example by taking elective courses, studying abroad or doing a minor.

Study abroad independently is an option if you want to go to a destination that doesn’t have an exchange agreement with Leiden University, or if you missed out on an exchange place.

In addition to your standard study programme, there are a range of extra study activities you can choose to follow. These are intended to enrich your studies, offer extra challenge or provide international experience. They are also a great asset to your CV.

As an international student there are a number of immigration and residency matters to keep in mind during your stay. You may also need to take additional steps when leaving the Netherlands.

Your student registration will expire automatically at the end of the academic year. However, if you end your study programme earlier, you must cancel your student registration.

As well as student associations, you can also join one of the independent non-profit student organisations that are active in Leiden and The Hague. Become a member and develop your skills while making new friends and contributing to social causes.

A minor allows you to develop your knowledge beyond the boundaries of your study programme, or to specialise further in your own field of study. You can follow a minor in Leiden and also in Delft or Rotterdam.

In this app, you can find all your personal study information in one place. Log in once and access your timetable, grades, study progress, PC availability, digital student card and the latest news, anytime and anywhere. You will also receive push notifications via the app in case of calamities.

As a bachelor’s student at Leiden University, you will be issued with binding study advice (BSA). This means you must obtain sufficient study credits in the first year of your bachelor’s programme to be permitted to continue studying. Some programmes also have additional requirements.

Studying abroad is a great way to broaden your horizons. As well as being beneficial for your academic and personal development, it is also an asset to your CV. With increasing internationalisation, many employers regard international experience as a real advantage.
